Sex therapy

Sexual function problems are assessed confidentially in a consultation with the physician and a treatment plan is made. Sessions may be individual or for couples.

Conditions it is used for

  • Premature ejaculation
  • Erection problems
  • Reduced sexual desire
  • Vaginismus
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm

A heading appearing here does not mean the procedure will be carried out for that condition, or that a result will follow; the decision is made after the consultation.

What sex therapy is

In sex therapy, the complaint is first listened to in detail; possible underlying medical causes (diabetes, hormone and vascular problems, current medicines) are investigated by examination and, where needed, tests. A personal or couple-specific plan of sessions and treatment is then made.

Who it is suitable for

Suitability is determined at the consultation, which takes account of general health, current medicines and any chronic conditions.

The conditions listed at the top of the page are assessed at the consultation. A condition appearing in the list does not mean the procedure will be carried out for it, or that a result will follow; the decision is made after the consultation.

How it is carried out

Sessions are held confidentially at the practice by the physician. Referral to the relevant specialty is made where needed.

  • The complaint is listened to in detail
  • An examination is carried out and tests requested where needed
  • A personal or couple-specific treatment plan is made
  • Progress is followed in regular sessions

What to expect afterwards

The process continues with regular sessions; their frequency and length are set after the first assessment.

Outcomes vary from person to person and the number of sessions is determined after the consultation.

Before the procedure

Regular medicines, known allergies, chronic conditions and pregnancy must be reported to the physician beforehand.

Good to know

Sessions are confidential. The points below are worth knowing before the first consultation.

  • Underlying medical causes are investigated first
  • Referral to urology, gynaecology or psychiatry is made where needed
  • Tell the physician about your medicines; do not stop them without advice

Frequently asked

Questions about sex therapy

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions is determined after the consultation. Giving a number in advance would not be right; a plan is made after the assessment and reviewed as it goes.

What should I do before the procedure?

Bring a list of the medicines you take regularly. Tell the practice when booking if you have a known allergy, a chronic condition, or may be pregnant.

Does it replace my medical treatment?

No. This procedure does not replace the medical treatment a physician has prescribed. Do not stop your medicines without your physician's advice.

Who carries out the procedure?

The procedure is carried out at the practice by the physician. Consultation, decision and procedure are handled by the same physician.
