Acupuncture and acupressure

Points determined at the consultation are stimulated with sterile, single-use needles or with finger pressure. Acupuncture is one of the traditional and complementary medicine methods defined by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Conditions it is used for

  • Headache and migraine
  • Lower back, neck and joint pain
  • Support for weight control
  • Support for stopping smoking
  • Sleep problems
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Nausea

A heading appearing here does not mean the procedure will be carried out for that condition, or that a result will follow; the decision is made after the consultation.

What acupuncture and acupressure is

In acupuncture, very fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at set points on the body and left for a determined time. Acupressure stimulates the same points with finger pressure, without needles. Which method and which points are used is determined at the consultation.

Regulatory framework

This is one of the traditional and complementary medicine methods defined by the Turkish Ministry of Health and is carried out only by a physician holding the relevant certificate, in a licensed unit. It does not replace the medical treatment a physician has prescribed.

Who it is suitable for

Suitability is determined at the consultation, which takes account of general health, current medicines and any chronic conditions.

The conditions listed at the top of the page are assessed at the consultation. A condition appearing in the list does not mean the procedure will be carried out for it, or that a result will follow; the decision is made after the consultation.

How it is carried out

The procedure is carried out at the practice by the physician, with single-use materials. It does not begin before informed consent is taken.

  • The points and method are determined by examination
  • The procedure is carried out by the physician as planned
  • The response is reviewed afterwards and the next session planned

What to expect afterwards

There may be short-lived tenderness or tiredness afterwards, which usually passes on its own.

Outcomes vary from person to person and the number of sessions is determined after the consultation.

Before the procedure

Regular medicines, known allergies, chronic conditions and pregnancy must be reported to the physician beforehand.

Who it is not suitable for

The procedure is not carried out in the situations below. The list may grow at the consultation; the decision rests with the physician.

  • Bleeding or clotting disorders, or regular use of blood thinners
  • Active infection or skin disease in the treatment area
  • Pregnancy (some points are not used; the decision rests with the physician)
  • A pacemaker (electrical stimulation is not used)
